A BIT OF MY BACKSTORY:
I started my first online business (an e-bay shop selling vintage clothing) from a corner of my tiny apartment bedroom in the spring of 2005. Soon after, I started making jewelry to cure the creative boredom I was suffering from the dull days of my 9-5 customer service job. I eventually started selling that online too in a shop I built from scratch with a will, a way and a Guide to Dreamweaver book in my lap.
In April 2006 I started writing my blog, then called Modish, with the intention to help promote not only my own jewelry shop, but the online shops of all those I admired in the community of handmakers and artists I had become a part of. And by golly, the blog was a hit! I had found my passion- writing and supporting others in an online community. And once I started offering advertising on my blog, I had found a way to make some actual moola, too!
The next year, I opened an online consignment boutique selling the work of 60+ artists, plus my own jewelry, as the hopeful drop to tip the bucket and let me earn enough to quit my steady paycheck, health insurance and wonderful work friends. And in July 2007, I was able to break free from my cubicle confinement to work for myself, fulltime! Wahooo!
In the years I’ve been self-employed since (I haven't looked back), I’ve been slowly but surely honing in on how best to follow my passion path, and have made a living as many titles including: design blogger, jewelry maker, graphic designer, consignment boutique owner, copywriter, vintage seller, marketing guru, PR rep and most recently- writer & coach. Now I just call myself, a “mojo-maker.”
I’m at the point where I’m making up my own job title because I’ve been through so many already that weren’t quite the right fit. Mojo-maker somehow encompasses everything I do now- what I want to create, what I want to share with others and what I’m best at.
Thanks for stopping by and hope to connect with you soon!
oh, and it's pronounced "mode"-ish :)
