In a time where the word "photoshopping" will soon have its own dictionary entry (it should!), it's comforting to see that some people are still doing it the "old way", scouring images from various sources, grabbing the ol' scissors or exacto knife and creating collages by hand. There's a definite nostalgic feeling that can get lost when artwork feels too "digitized", but Francesca Berrini of Unusual Cards is working to bring that nostalgia back with a pair of two good hands. She creates sarcastic and biting collage artwork from vintage images with a skill that rivals any photoshopping techniques- check them out at Unusual Cards!
There are new little indie shops blossoming up everywhere like pretty little flowers upon a stark grey Big Box landscape. One such little shop adding some color and beauty to the world is Blossom Creations. Erin is the brains behind the operation, creating housewares, stationery and accessories that are not only lovely, but environmentally sustainable as well, from her studio down under in Brisbane, Australia. She's starting small and hopes to create a full range of unique gifts that do not sacrifice style for the good of the environment proving that goods can be hip and sustainable at the same time!

I do tend to attribute human emotions and behaviors to inanimate objects often, buuuut, I've never thought of towels as "happy" until now! These bursts of color for you kitchen are touted by their creator, PataPri, as happy towels for happy people and by golly, I see just what she means!
Spread a little cheer to your dishes and sad little counter tops with some fun, graphic towels by PataPri!

Annnnd, because I have absolutely no time to spare and I want to make sure that I never sleep again (and also because I need a "creative writing" outlet and my personal blog is just too personal, I have nothing to say about myself...) I started ANOTHER blog called we are all animals.
You'll notice I just started it yesterday so there's only a few posts, but it's going to be filled with funny/wierd new stories from around the world, about celebs and regular folk alike, that help point out the "animal tendencies" that we humans have in how we act, treat one another, etc. It's basically just a gossip blog with a furry spin :) My cat also gets to be a "special correspondent" with her reports from the animal viewpoint. It's tooootally different than this blog, but check it out if ye like and bookmark it and tell yer friends if it's something you'd like to keep reading! Alright, that's all for today, back to "real" work!
Summer usually means an onslaught of weddings to attend, especially if you're at that "special age" where all your friends are starting to get married except for you, who's still terribly alone and fears that you'll find no one to love, ever, but at least you have your cat and your dignity and who wants to be married and "tied down" anyway- not you, you're free, free as a bird to do whatever you please! Uh, what was I talking about again? Oh yeah, weddings! And uh, wedding gifts! Like this cute and cuddly photo album, a perfect gift for the bride to be to house their snapshots from the big day.
Illustrated by the lovely Jen Corace and hand screen-printed and bound by the also lovely Deb Dormody of If'n Books, this handmade album would be perfect for a crafty bride. Find it only at If'n Books! And for more wonderful gift ideas (plus discounts!) for both brides and bridesmaids, check out the Modish Summer Gift Guide!
I have some ways to save you some moola on this Monday morning!
Feed your accessorizing urges with the summer scarf sale at Kimono Momo! Made from vintage kimono fabric, these scarves usually retail for $85 but are on sale for $45 thru July. Plus, bunches and bunches of goody goodness are now on sale at Hannah Zakari! The website is re-launching with a new look next month, so they're clearing out the old goodies to make room for all the new ones! Check out some of the sale stuff!
I have lots of "newsy" items to talk about, so grab a cuppa, sit back and relax and take in the Friday news!
For you lucky duckies in the Raleigh NC or surrounding areas, make plans to stop by the Rock & Shop Market this weekend! It's happenin tomorrow at the Tir Na Nog bar downtown from 1-5pm. There will be live music, uh, beer, and over 35 different vendors to choose from! From jewelry to silk-screened and reconstructed apparel, letterpressed posters, handmade soaps, stationery and more! Check it out and stay away from the icky malls this summer!
And MY MY, cute online consignment shop, has celebrated their 3 year anniversary by opening up a real brick and mortar boutique in Hatboro, PA! The new shop, like its online predecessor, features handmade clothing, jewelry, fanzines, purses and more by over 100 indie crafters, artists and zinesters! All proceeds from the Wonderland Retreat shop will be donated to the Elijah Wyman kidney fund. And hey, if you appreciate Modishoppe and the selection it offers and want to help spread the word about it, please vote for it in the StyleBakery "on the rise" awards! There's no specific category for "boutique" but if you dig the collection of jewelry available, or think there's a good selection of gifts or accessories, tell them! You can vote for Modishoppe in however many categories you'd like! Not only will you warm my cold cold heart, you'll also get a chance to win a $500 gift certificate to ravinstyle.com. The deadline to vote is July 1st! Thanks for your support, I really appreciate it!!
Perhaps if you too grew up along Henry Road in South Africa, a place where apricot trees grow and kids make summer homes of them, and then moved to Paris, London and New York, traveling all the while and finally settling down in sunny California, you would be so inspired by the colors and sights along your life's path thus far that you too could create vibrant, whimsical, color saturated home accessories like Paula of Henry Road does.
From luscious pillows in bold, summery colors:
To pretty, worldly inspired totes:
Plus papergoods to keep in touch and lavender sachets to keep fresh:
Each design is inspired by Paula's adventures and travels and are all hand drawn. And although there's been years of things for her to be inspired by, each piece does seem to hearken back to her African roots. Take a peek at all that's in store with a summery little walk down Henry Road!
There's a new shop around etsytown these days making cuter than cute hand screen-printed cards and more- Modern Radar! The designs are simple and somehow make pastel colors look bold and beautiful, and the prices are just right! Take a gander for yourself and find some fun cards for the summer months!
"Have you heard of Kjoo?"
"No, no, Kjoo! A handmade accessories line out of Portugal that's colorful and bright and stylish and totally unique!"
"Ooooh, Kjoo! Yeah those accessories are so pretty and so artsy!
"And they combine handmade felt and crochet-every creation is one of a kind!"
"Well, yahoo for Kjoo!"
The June giveaway is coming up, but there's one hitch- I need more goodies! If you're crafty and you're looking for a cheap, fun way to get the word out about your business, donating something to the Modish Goodie Box Giveaway is a great way to do it! Please help ensure that the giveaways continue to be as bodacious as the ones past by donating an item, or two or three! The only other hitch, I need them by next Monday, June 25th to include them in the June giveaway. Please read this for all the info and e-mail me for my address if you'd like to participate or have any questions. Thank you so much! And even if you can't get them to me by next Mon, please still consider participating for future months- it's fun and you'll get to see your name up in lights!
Print and pattern come together in a beautiful way with Sub Studio's Ichthyo series, hand-screen printed cards. Featuring pre-historic looking fishy creatures in basic yet bold colors, I'm really drawn to how they created such depth in just a one-color piece!
You can purchase them in color sets of four, or get a variety pack that includes one of each design (because, how can you choose!) Spread some color to someone you love in a way that doesn't seem at all fishy with the help of Sub Studio!
Want to know a little more about me? What it's like running this blog and Modishoppe? How I choose stuff to write about, how I choose goodies for the shop? And some advice I've learned along the way? Check it out and make sure to bookmark it as more interviews with other people in the crafting world will be published in the coming days! And thanks Maddy for the interview!
